A nation that has no borders ceases to be a nation. This is why it’s critical that we find realistic and effective solutions to secure this nation’s borders. And, while there are many polarizing thoughts on the subject, it’s also critical that we have discussions about this pressing issue.

That’s why, when I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days with Jason Owens, Chief Patrol Agent of the Houlton Sector (all of Maine), and his team, I jumped at the chance to learn more about what these men and women do and clear up misconceptions about their role and responsibilities. Today, we talk about those misconceptions, the threats our nation faces, how best to go about securing the resources to protect against those threats, and the brave men and women who do the work of securing our nation’s borders.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The common denominator
  • Becoming well-rounded
  • Different ways of doing business
  • Needing more resources
  • The border crisis
  • Protect your freedom
  • Presenting the facts
  • Relying on community
  • Crisis on the border
  • Finding a port of entry
  • Exploiting loopholes
  • The responsibility of public servants
  • Presenting objective facts
  • Subject Matter Expertise
  • Leaving a legacy behind

JASON OWENS

As I mentioned earlier, today I have the opportunity to sit down with the Chief Patrol Agent of the Houlton Sector (which is essentially all of Maine). He has over 20 years of experience under his belt and formerly served as Deputy Chief Patrol Agent of the Laredo Sector directing operation along the U.S/Mexico border.

He has completed both the Border Patrol Tactical Unit Selection Course and Border Patrol Search, Trauma, and Rescue Team Selection Course. He’s served in Texas, D.C., Honduras, Columbia, Iraq, and the Dominican Republic among other operations. I cannot imagine a more qualified man to talk about the unique and challenging work of protecting this nation’s borders.

Every one of us wants to be a more effective leader but there is a huge difference between being a boss/manager and being a leader, and, if you take it even further, a coach. A coach is someone who helps guide another individual to do and be more.

Today, I am joined by a great coach, Brett Bartholomew, the author of Conscious Coaching, to talk about what makes a successful coach. We talk about the social skills needed to effectively coach others, the distinction between compliance and commitment, the nuances between influencing others and manipulating them, and ultimately how to coach others well.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Building a personal brand
  • Transactional people
  • Breeding complacency
  • Overcoming perfectionism
  • Managing risk
  • Dealing with anxiety
  • Tools for productivity
  • Getting ahold of your demons
  • Finding the right headspace
  • The outcome of influence
  • Navigating your own darkness
  • Leading with value
  • The three-stage framework

BRETT BARTHOLOMEW

As I stated earlier, I am joined by my friend and an absolutely phenomenal coach, Brett Bartholomew.

I only met Brett recently but I did watch him present some of the ideas that he’s going to share with you today at SummerStrong earlier in the year and I can tell you that without a doubt, Brett is extremely qualified and competent when it comes to human psychology and performance and how to optimize the body and brain for performance.

He is a strength and conditioning coach, consultant, and the founder of the consulting company, The Bridge Human Performance. He’s worked with professional athletes, Olympians, members of Special Forces, Fortune 500 Companies, and so many more. And, I’m honored he’s joining us to share his in-depth knowledge of coaching others well.

IRON COUNCIL

Obviously, we’re talking about leadership and coaching today on this podcast and, ironically enough, we do a deep dive into this exact subject inside our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, this month.

If you want to learn more about what it takes to lead and coach others effectively, consider joining us and tapping into the conversations, resources, tools, and accountability to help you become a more effective leader inside your business, your home, and community.

With over 500 members inside the Iron Council, you’re going to get a broad range of perspectives on topics ranging from leadership and self-development to time management skills and stoicism.

Gents, today I am joined by my friend and repeat guest, Jack Carr. There are just certain people that when you meet them, there seems to be a connection like you’ve been friends for a very long time.

I’m honored that Jack is joining me again to talk about the second installment of his thriller series, True Believer. But we talk about a whole lot more than just that. We dive into the pros and cons of social media, falling into comparison with others, learning to be a professional in all your endeavors, the trap of identifying with your occupation, and a whole lot more.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Building a readership
  • Defending the tribe
  • The art of storytelling
  • Finding your next mission in life
  • Taking guys down-range
  • Making micro adjustments
  • Being professional
  • The hero’s journey
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Trusting your instincts
  • The importance of mentorship
  • Resonating with revenge
  • Weaving in authenticity

JACK CARR

As I mentioned earlier, my friend, Jack Carr is back for round two on the podcast.

If you don’t know who Jack is, he spent 20 years in Navy Special Warfare as an enlisted SEAL sniper to a troop and eventually a unit commander with multiple combat deployments.

Upon retiring from the Navy, Jack went on to establish a very successful writing career (something he always knew he wanted to do after service). In fact, his books are two of the very few fictional books I’ve ever read and I was not able to put them down.

He draws upon his lessons from the military and his extensive training and research to create powerful stories that every man will enjoy reading.

I hope you enjoy listening in on our conversation as much as I enjoyed having it.

LEGACY

I’ve got to bring your attention to something I haven’t talked about for a little while and that is our ORDER OF MAN LEGACY EXPERIENCE.

We’ve just released the dates and registration for our next father/son experience which will talk place in Central Maine on June 11th-14th 2020. This is an experience designed to forge a deeper bond between you and your son and give you the tools and guidance you’ll need to usher your boy into manhood.

We’ve only done two events of these in the past and this will be the first one held on our new property in Maine. After doing about a dozen different events, I can tell you that the LEGACY EXPERIENCE is, by far, my favorite event to host.

Head to www.orderofman.com/legacy to get more information, watch a video recap from our last event, and get registered. Do it quickly because we only have 16 spots remaining. That is it! Again, www.orderofman.com/legacy.

What causes one man to jump on a grenade to save a fellow Marine when most of us would run the other way? That’s exactly what my guest today, Kyle Carpenter, did when attacked by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2010. Through his actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor as the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient.

Today, Kyle and I talk about the days leading up to his heroic action, what exactly happened, his injuries sustained, his road to recovery, and his evolution as a human being since. We also cover his new book, You Are Worth It: Building a Life Worth Fighting For.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Living life one day at a time
  • Joining the Marines
  • Always looking for a challenge
  • Searching for the right path
  • Preparing for the unknown
  • Valuing those around you
  • Learning from others
  • Life after boot camp
  • Helping the oppressed
  • Getting mission-ready
  • Surrounded by Taliban
  • Accepting your fate
  • A level of detachment
  • Another day in Afganistan
  • Going through rehabilitation
  • A life well lived
  • Living a bonus round

KYLE CARPENTER

Gentlemen, today I have the honor of introducing you to my friend and the youngest ever living Medal of Honor recipient, Kyle Carpenter.

Kyle joined the Marine Corps at 19 and not long after was deployed with the 1st Marine Division to Afghanistan where he threw himself on a grenade to save a fellow Marine.

This man is one of the most humble people that I know and I’m inspired by his experience, his life, and who is he as a human being.

Before we get into the conversation, I’m going to read you his Medal of Honor Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 21 November 2010. Lance Corporal Carpenter was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine rifle squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. The platoon had established Patrol Base Dakota two days earlier in a small village in the Marjah District in order to disrupt enemy activity and provide security for the local Afghan population. Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base Dakota when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.

MAINE EVENT

Many of you already know that a couple of months ago we held our first-ever Maine Event. It was such a huge success, that I wanted to open it up again as soon as possible.

This is a 2 ½ day event designed to help you forge new bonds with men on the same path as you and give you the tools and framework to accomplish more in a 90-day period that you have potential in your entire life.

If you want to lock in one of the 20 remaining spots, head to www.orderofman.com/maineevent today, watch the video recap of our last event, and get registered quickly. I hope to see you there. Again, go to www.orderofman.com/maineevent.

We live in a climate where we are inundated with messages, opportunities, and entertainment. We’ve demanded and created a culture where we are never bored, never quiet, and never satisfied. But what if that noise was one of the largest barriers to satisfaction and fulfillment in our lives?

Today, I am joined by repeat guest, Ryan Holiday, to talk about his new book, Stillness is the Key. We cover why stillness is the key to mastery, freedom, happiness, and tranquility. We also do a deeper dive into the power of saying, “no,” how to conquer anger, finding confidence but avoiding ego, and how stillness truly is the key.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • A better way of living
  • It’s all about the present
  • Needing stillness in your life
  • The pre-occupied mind
  • Getting into the zone
  • Taking control of your environment
  • How to model stillness
  • Misery in complete freedom
  • Learning to say no
  • Applying filters to life
  • Choosing meaningfulness
  • Making conscience decisions
  • Giving up destructive control
  • Focusing on the controllable
  • How to conquer anger

RYAN HOLIDAY

My guest today is Ryan Holiday. You’ve heard him on this podcast before and many of you likely already know who he is and have read his books, Ego is the Enemy, The Obstacle is the Way, and The Daily Stoic.

He is someone I consider to be a great thinker and many of his ideas and works have helped me find the philosophy of Stoicism and discover more satisfaction and fulfillment in my life.

I’m honored to have Ryan back on the podcast to talk about the concept of stillness. This is one area I really struggle with so reading his new book and, of course, having this conversation proved to be transformative for me. I know it will be for you too.
