As many of you know, in January of this year, my oldest son and I started building a canoe. As we embarked upon this project, many of you introduced me on Instagram to a professional boat builder named @trentpreszler.

Fortunately, Trent and I built a relationship as he shared with me some of his own successes and failures. And, when I found out he had a new book coming out called, Little and Often, I knew that I needed to have him on the podcast.

Today, Trent and I talk about why he decided to build a canoe with the tools his dad left him, what the canoe symbolizes and how important it has been throughout the history of the world, why we place our fathers on pedestals they don’t belong, becoming your own man, why our scars are important, and how little and often soon becomes great.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Taking pride in building a boat
  • Being part of a long history
  • A symbol of self-reliance
  • Feeling a sense of value
  • Leading to extraordinary
  • On the road to freedom
  • Finding purpose in your life
  • Getting back to the adventure
  • Knowing where you came from
  • The pedestal of fatherhood
  • Having empathy toward your father
  • Plowing through uncertainty
  • Feeling a sense of belonging
  • Adding up to a man
  • Forging your own identity
  • Becoming more than a side hustle

TRENT PRESZLER

My guest today is a man I was introduced to by many of you when I began our canoe-building project in January of this year.

His name is @trentpreszler and he is a professional boat builder. Many of you have probably seen his works of art (I call them that because they’re absolutely beautiful) which are actually tools that men have been utilizing for thousands of years to improve their station in life.

Trent is the CEO of Bedell Cellars, a winery in Long Island, New York but in 2014 he began a new path as he built his first canoe with his rancher father’s tools. Since then, Trent has been building beautiful luxury canoes which, admittedly, is not a path he thought he would find himself on.

Trent has become a friend of mine and someone who is extremely insightful. And, as strange as it may sound, I believe we were destined in a way to connect.

BATTLE PLANNING APP

Many of you are familiar with our Battle Planner which I developed nearly 5 years ago and have been refining since then. But what you may not be familiar with is the new Battle Planning App that we just released that has turned in our written planner into something that you can carry with you wherever you go in the palm of your hand.

The Battle Planning App will walk you through everything you need to do to make more of the next 12 weeks than most people do all year and, with a daily non-negotiable and daily task section, it will become your one-stop planning, organizing, and strategizing tool.

If you’re interested, you can check out the free version of the app at www.12weekbattleplanner.com and see how it will improve every facet of your life.

One of my favorite podcast guests and friends is back on the podcast today. His name is Jack Carr, former Navy SEAL and the author of the James Reece series with his latest book just released called The Devil’s Hand.

Today, Jack and I talk about the differences between a calling and a career, dealing with discouragement from others, the conditioning that takes place in society and how to overcome it, Joseph Campbell’s, The Hero’s Journey, and how to utilize it in your own life.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Prioritizing opportunity
  • Creating powerful relationships
  • Career versus profession
  • Preparing to be an author
  • Making things possible
  • Working with Chris Pratt
  • Your next calling in life
  • Getting into character
  • The power of social media
  • Getting the job done
  • Dealing with internet trolls

JACK CARR

As I mentioned previously, my guest today is the one and only Jack Carr. I met Jack years ago when we had a podcast during the release of his first book after retiring as a Navy SEAL.

I could tell you a bunch about his books and how successful he is but what you may not know is he’s one of the most genuine men you’ll meet. He invited me into his home, introduced me to his beautiful family, and broke bread with me like we were old friends.

And, since then, we have become friends and it’s been incredible to see him become so successful as an author with one of his books being filmed right now with Chris Pratt playing the role of James Reece (which we talk a bit about in this podcast).

PREPARING FOR DESTRUCTION

It’s no surprise to you that the last 12 months or so have been…eventful, to say the least. That’s why with as many variables that we, as men, are likely to face, it’s crucial that we be prepared for whatever may come.

After all, David Gilmore said, “The real man gains renown by standing between his family and destruction absorbing the blows of fate with equanimity.”

And, that’s exactly what we’re talking about in the Iron Council this month. We’re learning, discussing, and challenging each other to become more prepared for emergencies, natural disasters, violent encounters, and anything else we may potentially run against.

If you want to learn more about being prepared and banding with men who will teach you and hold you accountable for doing so, join us in our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council by going to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.

My guest today is the one and only Jack Donovan. I’ve been honored to get to know him over the past several years and much of what he has shared regarding men and masculinity has shaped my own personal perspective of how we are to show up as fathers, husbands, and leaders in our business and community.

Today, we talk about his latest book, Fire in the Dark. We also do a deep dive into the roles of masculinity, individual responsibility, the heroic ideal, and why we as men look to the Gods and what we can learn from them.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Writing about men’s issues
  • Adding value to others
  • Different voices for different ears
  • What defines masculinity
  • The eternal truths
  • Biological constructs
  • Rational division of labor
  • Gender theory studies
  • The slippery-slope fallacy
  • Taking over a culture
  • Learning to be technical
  • Identifying weakness
  • Settling for mediocrity
  • Self-imposed shackles
  • The collapse of Moral consensus
  • Forming a responsible opinion

JACK DONOVAN

As I said earlier, my guest today is none other than Jack Donovan. Fortunately, I’ve gotten to know Jack over the past several years and we’ve spent a lot of time talking about masculinity and what it means to be a man.

I was introduced to his work years ago when I read, The Way of Men, and since then, I’ve been fascinated with his interesting and unique perspectives, and his willingness to share what have only increasingly become polarizing thoughts and ideas.

Jack is an extremely fascinated man and has caused me to take a hard look at what I perceive as the responsibilities of men, what it means to be a man, and how we can and should show up in the world.

You guys are really going to enjoy this one.

PREPARING FOR A DISASTER

I think most of us pride ourselves on being prepared to deal with what life has to offer us. After all, it was Douglas Wilson who said, “The real man gains renown by standing between his family and destruction, absorbing the blows of fate with equanimity.”

But the question remains, “Are you really prepared for what may come your way?”

That’s the question we’re working to answer this month in our exclusive brotherhood, The Iron Council. We’ll be discussing and challenging each other to focus on the priorities of preparedness, shoring up our weaknesses, and holding each other accountable to put ourselves and our families in a better position should disaster strike.

And, on top of all that, you’ll get the accountability, guidance, and direction when you band with us inside the Iron Council.

To get prepared for whatever life may throw at you and to unlock access to the accountability needed to thrive, learn more and join us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.

As many of you know, several years ago, I immersed myself in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and, frankly, it’s been one of the best things I’ve done for myself in my entire life. And, today, I am joined by a man who has done a tremendous job in getting the art to the masses by codifying a system of learning Jiu-Jitsu that has trained and developed tens of thousands of martial artists.

His name is @renergracie, a 4th-degree black belt, the grandson of Helio Gracie, and the founder and chief instructor of Gracie University. We talk about the system he and his brother created, the differences between sport BJJ and combat BJJ, building legacies, training our police force to handle themselves, and how to develop a level of comfort in chaos.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The starting point of Jiu-Jitsu
  • Becoming the exception
  • Knowing when to strike
  • Doing things the right way
  • The only fight that matters
  • A product of savagery
  • Cracking the code
  • The art of violence
  • The Police Disappointment Gap
  • Spreading the word
  • The Bully-Proof program
  • Enforcing boundaries
  • Expressing dissatisfaction
  • Understanding the consequences

RENER GRACIE

My guest today is Rener Gracie. He is the grandson of the man who brought Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to America, Helio Gracie. He is a 4th-degree black belt and is the founder and lead instructor of Gracie University where he has instructed thousands of men, women, and children in the art of BJJ.

He’s also extremely innovative and forward-thinking and has created programs specifically designed for law enforcement, women, and children (through their Gracie Bullyproof program).

In addition, he trains many top-level fighters including UFC’s Brian Ortega. Needless to say, the man knows what he’s doing and he comes from a long line of very capable and proficient tacticians.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Most of the men who join our exclusive brotherhood, the Iron Council, do so to gain some level of accountability. In fact, that is one of the main reasons I started the organization.

But with as many men who are looking for some level of accountability from the programs, masterminds, and brotherhoods, they participate in, few offer as much accountability as we have built into the Iron Council.

When you band with us, not only will you get access to the 820+ men who belong to the Iron Council but you’ll also have the opportunity to join a Battle Team of 15 men who will hold your feet to the fire.

And, with the addition of our new Battle Planning App (included in membership), you’ll have the metrics and data needed to achieve at every aspect of your life.

If you’re looking for added accountability in your life and you want the tools and systems needed to thrive, join us at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.
