We’ve all heard people say, “You’ve got to pay your dues” or the concept of the 10,000-hour rule. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if you could skip the line, so to speak, and accelerate the results of your life while everyone else stands in line simply waiting for their turn.

That’s what my guest today, the one and only James Altucher, and I discuss – how to use the concept of 10,000 experiments, not 10,000 hours. We talk about why “stay in your lane” is bad advice, how to become the top 1% in your field much more efficiently, how to become an idea-generating machine, harnessing the power of “idea sex,” and how to creatively add value to others so you can win faster.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The importance of good storytelling
  • Why you should NOT stay in your lane
  • Caring what the right people think
  • The Concept of 10,000 hours
  • The upside of experimenting
  • Dividing your skills into micro-skills
  • How to generate new ideas
  • Finding and creating new opportunities
  • How to never run out of ideas

Most of you are probably aware of Matthew McConaughey and his new book, Greenlights. I’ll admit, I was a bit hesitant to read the book myself (I explain why to Matthew in this podcast), but after hearing from enough people that I had to read it, I decided to pick up a copy and, let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

So, when I had the opportunity to have Matthew join me on the podcast, I jumped at the chance. We talk about many important topics in this conversation and really hit on fatherhood as we’re approaching Father’s Day. We also discuss the power of being the underdog, reinventing yourself, the value of sacrifice, taking our fathers off pedestals they don’t belong, and the concept and benefit of greenlights.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gambling and investing in yourself
  • Having the choice to be a victim
  • Putting your father on a pedestal
  • Rituals and initiations with your child
  • Living in complacency and comfort
  • Why American needs a civics class
  • The value of playing the long game
  • Course correcting your children
  • Realizing that you’re immortal

That’s why I really enjoy my conversations with my guest today, Clint Emerson. He has made a career and life out of understanding violence and how to use it effectively. And, in his new book, 100 Deadly Skills: Combat Edition, he breaks down basic combat skills every man ought to learn and become proficient in.
