Gentlemen, I cannot tell you how stoked I am to have my guest on today, Mr. Michael Chandler. If you’re not already familiar with who he is, Chandler is a three-time Bellator MMA Champion who only recently made his debut in the UFC after long-time speculation of him making the switch to UFC.

On top of all of that, Michael is a devoted family man and we spent about half of our conversation talking about what it means for him to be a husband and father. We also cover overcoming a very public loss, why every man ought to bet on himself, three traps to avoid when on the losing side of the equation, Chandler’s upcoming fight in November, and the conflicting aspirations of being a family man and fighter.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Being selfish in training so you can be selfless with your family
  • Grinding until we’re 50
  • Anticipating and avoiding regret
  • The importance of making your partner the best person they can be
  • In relationships, it all comes down to communication
  • Taking chances on yourself
  • What do you do when you fall short
  • Be your authentic self
  • Praying for wisdom and discernment
  • Success not perfection
  • We follow people because they are willing to take chances
  • Fighting for a living, while living a Christian life
  • The importance of having a long term perspective
  • Embracing the process should be the goal

Frankly, gents, I don’t even know what to say about this conversation. It was a powerful discussion from a man who has been through hell and back to fight for not only who he is as a man but as a father of his children.

His name is Greg Ellis and, although you may not recognize his name, you have definitely seen him on the Silver Screen. Today we talk about the true purpose of vulnerability, why social media should be called “anti-social media,” the crisis of meaning that modern society is facing, and why fatherhood is in the crosshairs.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Using social media as a tool
  • Appreciating art, literature, and sports
  • We are not entitled to success
  • Drawing inspiration from challenge
  • Society devaluing the “male”
  • The importance of an earned merit system
  • Competition versus cooperation
  • The most influential person gets to establish and enforce the rules

Every one of us intuitively knows that getting stronger is the right thing to do. It quite literally improves every facet of our lives from the influence we can develop with others, to the energy needed to build a business, and the stamina and mental fortitude needed to raise and lead a family. Why, then, do so many men slack in this department?

My guest, Sal Di Stefano, and I talk about that today. He is an expert in strength training and the author of The Resistance Training Revolution. We discuss the chronic health issues of today’s modern man, cardio vs. strength training, developing testosterone naturally, the traits of admirable men, and how to burn fat and get stronger.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Why men are not doing what they know they should be doing
  • What resistance training is…and IS NOT
  • Understanding calories and how our bodies adapt
  • Why it makes sense to “get jacked”
  • You have to enjoy or at least value the process
  • All forms of activity, if applied appropriately, have value

I had the opportunity to visit with Representative Madison Cawthorn with my family in DC last week and, let me tell you, it did not disappoint. We got a chance to tour the Capitol Building and get a small glimpse inside the world of politics and DC. But we also had the chance to sit down in his office and throw down the podcast you’re about to listen to.

We talk about the world of politics, why, while politics is fast-paced, very little seems to get accomplished on the Hill, how we as men can be informed without immersing ourselves in the political arena and theater that comes with it, the world of outrage, and, at the end of the day, what we as men need to do to keep this country on track.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Most politicians come to DC with noble intentions
  • Its important (and fun) to play the political game
  • Term limits on congress
  • Values-based rather than issue-based representation
  • How to avoid corruption while being surrounded by it
  • Don’t be defined by your challenges
  • Working with people you don’t like

  • Disappointment is the most challenging thing about being in DC
  • What is the political leadership doing right?
  • Time for the silent majority to wake up
  • A term limit bill that actually has a chance
  • Eliminating federal income tax

Our innate pursuit of comfort is the enemy of achievement and, yet, we’ve failed collectively to keep our biological hardwiring to seek the path of least resistance in check. Why is that? Why is it that we know we should seek discomfort yet find it so difficult to do?

That’s the topic of my conversation today with Michael Easter, the author of The Comfort Crisis. Today, Michael and I discuss the damage of helicopter and “snow plow” parenting, the psychological programming that keeps us from achievement, the concept of Mysogi and embracing annual challenges, how a healthy relationship with death keeps people fulfilled, and ultimately what you can do to overcome the Comfort Crisis that permeates every fabric of society.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Life really isn’t that hard
  • Parents seeking guidance from, rather thank giving guidance to, their kids
  • Snow plow parenting
  • Measuring happiness
  • The value in considering your own death
