Our mind is the most powerful thing we can control. And, yet, if you’re anything like me, you don’t spend nearly enough time training the mind to produce the results you desire. In fact, if things don’t seem to be working well in my life, I tend to be a man who just goes even harder hoping I can drive right through the problems I’m dealing with.

Instead, my guest today, Michael Hyatt, makes the case that the stories and narratives (often subconscious) in our minds actually dictate much of the results we experience. So, today, we dive deep into how to retrain the mind to draft stories that serve us rather than hurt us, the value of listening to the “narrator” of your life, why we should all really listen to the language we’re using, how to interrogate the stories of your life, and create a new, fundamental sense of identity.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The story we tell ourselves impacts the results we achieve
  • Separating facts from the meaning we assign
  • How to determine if your stories are serving you
  • Understanding the “narrator” in your head
  • Correlation doesn’t equal causation
  • Mindset can change your physiological response
  • Lead ourselves well before we can lead others well
  • The impact of labeling ourselves
  • Strategies for changing your thinking

(36:00) What is the one thing, or several things, that have surprised you most about your sobriety?

(42:40) Have you seen or heard of some other sources around the internet that promote to help young men?

We all want to lead. But not all of us can do so. Not right now but that doesn’t mean we aren’t capable of  becoming the leader we desire to be. My guest today is Brett Bartholomew, a word-class performance coach and he is going to share exactly how we can begin to lead in our families, businesses, and communities more effectively.

Today, we talk about six driving factors of individuals, the four main communication styles and how to use the effectively, how power, influence, and manipulation can be wielded for good, the use of “referent power,” and how leaders play chess, not checkers.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Commitment and compliance
  • Tailoring your communication and messaging
  • Building teams with different personality types
  • The baseline of communication is misunderstanding
  • Some people are just interested in making you the enemy
  • Impression management is a form of communication
  • Messages have to be repeated

As young boys, the world is quite literally our playground. It seems so full of questions waiting to be answered and mysterious places to discover and explore. It’s in our nature to run, jump, play and unlock the secrets that call to us. Then, as we become men, we lose a lot of the natural curiosity and desire to traverse the world around us. The world around us often become more like a jail cell than the playground we remember of our youth.

My guest today is a man who has not lost a bit of the curiosity and excitement of his youth. If anything, he has cultivated it. His name is Danny Bolton. Today, you’re going to hear how to recapture that magic. We talk about how hesitation hurts us, a man’s need to play, creating an enemy to fight against, the analogy of the wolf, sheep, and sheep herder, the power of being ready for anything, and how to tap back into our primal nature.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Taking the life of an animal in the most humane and efficient way possible
  • Letting out your “animal” side
  • How to get started expressing your wild side
  • Some stress is great, but we stress about too much
  • Do we need to have some type of “enemy” to confront
  • We tend to choose the path of least resistance
  • Considering risk in the decision making process
  • Underestimating risk in the moment
  • Pressure of performing/shooting around other people

In this week’s ASK ME ANYTHING, Kipp Sorensen and Shawn Villalovos take on the hottest questions of the week. Hit Ryan up on Instagram at @ryanmichler and share what’s working in your life.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

(5:40) Do you have a faith based goal for 2023? If so how are you choosing to measure this in order to manage it and show progress in an area that sometimes is based more off of feeling or, when tangibly measured, can seem like action without faith?

(19:05) What are your thoughts on compassion fatigue, and what to do to revitalize my passion for mentoring others?

(32:38) I have been seeing someone for 3 months now and we've said we want to be official but she has some bad bf history that is keeping her from doing so (her words). We've had a conversation about it and she has communicated that she's still concerned that i may have some red flags she hasn't seen yet and wont take the next step. It seems the longer she doesn't find something the more certain she is they exist. Most of what she has said she wants seem like what you develop over a year or more relationship.  I have been patient as I have dealt with similar stuff myself but I am struggling to not feel the consistent "no not yet" as a form of rejection. its getting to the point that Im losing interest despite her being a wonderful woman with great communication. What can I/we do to work through this before I completely walk away?

(41:10) How do y’all balance the mindsets of competing with yesterday’s version of yourself and competing with others? Do y’all think that these mindsets are at odds with one another or complimentary?

(50:00) How do you disengage from all social media, when most of your friends and family live out of state, and you buy and sell things on FB marketplace all the time?

(55:15) I’m dating a girl, she told me there is another guy she has been dating longer she is might be getting serious with. I told her I didn't really care about her and what other guys are doing - that I am going to keep asking her out as long as I'm single, interested, and she is available. What's your suggestion for keeping my mind off the competition and focused on us?

(1:03:05) I would like to hear more on raising daughters. My oldest is a girl, nearly 11, and my wife and I struggle with how to handle her exposure to things that she isn’t ready for yet. We homeschool her and she is very bright but we’ve caught her on websites that she shouldn’t be on and she has been calling things sexist etc. she doesn’t fully grasp what some of these things mean but I am starting to have deeper conversations with her and my wife on a regular basis. Any other tips would be great!

Every single day, we’re faced with choices that will either help or hinder us and move us closer to our goals and desires or further away. What we decide in those moments will determine our ultimate results. And, if we’re not satisfied with our current reality, it’s safe to assume that we made choices that did not serve us well.

Today I’m joined by former NFL Super Bowl Champion and Results Coach, Setema Gali to talk about these choices. We also cover the power of decisiveness, making certain that our priorities don’t merely get the leftovers, the level of commitment required to thrive and win, the positive benefits of guilt and shame, the dangers of false humility, and the trap of self-martyrdom and victimization.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Setting the standard for your kids
  • Need to balance discipline with letting your kids be kids
  • The importance of establishing clear agreements with your family
  • Family values
  • Building champs instead of chumps
  • We can experience emotion without it becoming our identity
  • What we focus on most is who we become
  • Conflicting thoughts about money and morals
  • Our commitment alters everything
  • We’re not victims, we get to choose
  • Empower yourself by taking responsibility
