The truth is often uncomfortable. And, frankly, most of us aren’t willing to take a deep, hard look into what we know to be true. We do this because we’re afraid. Afraid of what we might see. Afraid of what it may expose in ourselves. Afraid of what the truth may require us to do moving forward.

My guest today is a friend and long-term mentor of mine. His name is Sean Whalen and one thing he’s been consistent about his desire to seek and share the truth. And, he’s revealed, for better and worse, some truths about myself that I was unwilling to acknowledge for a very long time. Today we talk about why some people despise the success of others, acknowledging what kind of men you need to become to achieve what you want, why most people are blissfully dissatisfied, and the power of embracing uncomfortable truths.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Producing results
  • Tearing others down
  • Identifying with pain
  • Building a physique
  • Addictive patterns
  • Breaking social contracts
  • Validating mediocrity
  • Change your circle
  • Habits & rituals
  • Implanting your vision
  • Loving yourself
  • Becoming a machine

SEAN WHALEN

My guest today is my good friend and long-term mentor, Sean Whalen. He has been instrumental in helping me build Order of Man into what it is but more importantly, me into who I am.

I don’t always agree with or, to a degree, get along with him but I believe that is the power of a coach and mentor – someone who you can respect but challenges you to look at life in a way that is difficult and uncomfortable.

And Sean certainly makes people feel uncomfortable. He says out loud what most people believe to be things you don’t say at all and, in the process, his videos and messages have been viewed hundreds of millions of times. Obviously, he’s a very polarizing man but he forces you to look at situations and events in new ways and has personally helped me achieve some incredible results in my life.

IRON COUNCIL

Gents, let me pause the conversation very quickly. I’ve seen a tremendous uptick in new members in the Iron Council and I can only imagine the reason is that in times of uncertainty, men look to bring stability and order to the chaos.

And, that’s exactly what we’re doing inside the Iron Council – giving you the tools and framework to predictably and efficiently produce results in your life.

If you’re trying to start a business, rekindle a romantic relationship, connect with your kids, lose that spare tire, build wealth, become more influential, or any other goal that you may be working on, the Iron Council, has what you need to make it a reality.

When you join us, you’ll get the tools and framework you need to do what you’ve simply been daydreaming about for a very long time.

If you’re ready to get to work, join us. We’re not going to do it for you but we do have a track for you to run on and the accountability that comes from a brotherhood of loyal, committed, successful men.

Reason seems to be in increasingly short supply, which is unfortunate considering some of the messes we’ve found ourselves in will only be solved through reasonable thought, ideas, and people. Also unfortunate is that those who are the loudest seem to be the most unreasonable and only wish to perpetuate the problems we have in modern society and culture.

Today, I am joined by the one and only, Dave Rubin, New York Times Bestselling author of, Don’t Burn This Book: Thinking for Yourself in an Age of Unreason. What I like most about Dave and this conversation is that he’s willing to talk about the things you’re not “supposed” to talk about including the myth of the gender gap, why “hate speech” should be protected speech, why not everyone is a Nazi as perpetuated by what he calls, the “lefties,” and ultimately how to be reasonable in a world that seems to be anything but.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Moving towards equality
  • Governmental control
  • Consolidating power
  • Empirical truths
  • The human spirit
  • Valuing individuality
  • Protecting free speech
  • Classic Liberalism
  • Thinking for yourself
  • The best path forward
  • American privilege
  • Be the vocal majority

DAVE RUBIN

As I said before, my guest today is Dave Rubin and I’m sure many of you are already familiar with him and have some preconceived notions about who he is and what he stands for.

I’ve been following him for some time now and am fascinated with his journey from left-leaning progressive to a free-thinking classical liberal. He is the host of the Rubin Report and spent almost two years touring and opening for his friend and mentor, Jordan Peterson.

His background is in standup comedy but he has become extremely well-known for his podcast where he’s interviewed Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, Ben Shapiro, Larry King, Dan Crenshaw, Adam Carolla, and so many more.

Today, he’s here to talk with us about thinking freely and openly about some of our culture’s most polarizing subjects.

IRON COUNCIL

Gentlemen, let me hit the pause button on the conversation and introduce you to the Iron Council.

I am amazed by the growth we’ve been experiencing over the past several weeks and I believe it’s because men are beginning to see the value in banding with other men who have their back and want them to succeed.

If you were to strip away everything from the Iron Council, that’s what it’s all about – a band of brothers who will support, encourage, and hold you accountable. And, if you’re like most men, that isn’t something that you have in your life.

And, even if you do, the conversations stay on the surface and never get to the heart of what really matters and all that you’re trying to accomplish as a family man, business owner, and leader in your community.

If you’re ready to forge a powerful bond with like-minded men and chart the path that will lead you to where you want to go, I invite you to join the Iron Council at www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.

Hope is something most of us believe is a necessity in order to progress. Without it, would you be driven to do anything meaningful in your life? It’s hope that convinces you of potential rewards on the other side of your efforts. But what if the way you’ve been looking at hope isn’t help you but hindering? And, if that’s the case, is there a more practical, pragmatic way for you to approach hopefulness in a way that will serve you best?

That’s what today’s conversation is all about. I’m joined by New York Times Bestselling Author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything is F*cked, Mark Manson. We talk about the uncomfortable truth few people are willing to admit to themselves, the difference between Master Morality and Slave Morality, how everyone is driven by what he calls, “a God Value,” how pain is the universal constant, and why, in the midst of everything being horrible, you can still have hope.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Getting through it together
  • The new normal
  • A need for certainty
  • Create a daily structure
  • The thinking brain
  • The process of maturity
  • Social accountability
  • Implementing habits
  • Finding new behavior
  • Shifting your perception
  • The uncomfortable truth
  • Gaining approval
  • The need for meaning
  • Sharing your story
  • Instinctual morality
  • Victimhood culture

MARK MANSON

My guest today is the one and only, Mark Manson, and it’s very likely that you are already very familiar with him, or at least, his last two books, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck and Everything is F*cked.

He is a New York Times Bestselling Author and a self-described thinker and life enthusiast. Part of the reason for his tremendous success is his no BS approach to self-development. In fact, that’s the reason why I follow him and his words closely. In an environment and popular culture designed to make everyone feel good about themselves, Mark would rather bring to light the uncomfortable truths few are willing to deal with.

Guys, I think you’re going to like this one as much as I enjoyed the conversation. So, sit back, take some notes, and listen to the way it really is.

IRON COUNCIL

Gents, our digital brotherhood, the Iron Council continues to grow in these uncertain times. I think that’s because it’s times like these that really cause us to reflect on the type of men we are and how we’re showing up.

For a long time, I knew that I was capable of so much more but it was frustrating knowing that there was a huge gap between what I knew I was capable of and what I was actually doing.

I started hiring mentors and surrounding myself with good and capable men and that’s when things really started to take a turn for the better.

The problem for most men is that they don’t know where connect with the type of men I’m talking about. That’s what the Iron Council is for and, without beating a dead horse about it, if you want to thrive in all aspects of your life, band with other men. It really is that powerful.

What does it take to exhibit extreme courage under fire? I wish I could tell you there was an exact formula for performing well under life and death pressure but there isn’t. But what I can tell you is that my guest today, Omar ‘Crispy’ Avila is a man who has done just that.

When in Iraq, his vehicle was hit by an IED sending it six feet in the air. I’m not going to ruin the story by telling you about the resulting fallout and how Crispy conducted himself but I will say you’re not going to want to miss it. We also talk about using humor as a way to calm a situation, overcoming survivor’s guilt, how to train properly for unknown events, and how every man can learn to develop courage under fire.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Serving your community
  • Letting your guard down
  • Making light of a situation
  • Comedy as therapy
  • Joining the infantry
  • Moving forward in life
  • Laying down fire
  • Extended deployment
  • Losing faith in God
  • Keeping your composure
  • The Green Zone
  • Flying into Germany
  • Focus under chaos
  • Survivors guilt
  • The recovery process
  • Finding inner peace

OMAR ‘CRISPY’ AVILA

My guest today is Omar ‘Crispy’ Avila and he is a retired army combat veteran. But more than that he is someone who is extremely influential in the veteran community and has used his unfortunate circumstances to lift and inspire millions of people across the planet.

He sustained catastrophic damage to his body when his vehicle was hit with an IED and survived over 75% of his body burned and been rendered nearly blind.

I had the opportunity to meet him at SHOT Show several months ago and invited him to join us on the podcast because I have always been inspired by how he lives his life, uses humor with the Black Rifle Coffee Company team to inspire, and the kind of man he is.

PRIORITIZE AND EXECUTE

If you’re anything like me, it’s easy for you to fall into the trap of consumption. I mean, you’re listening to this podcast right now which can be beneficial but if you never apply any of what you learn, is it even useful?

This is the trap of the self-development space – consumption without production.

But in the Iron Council for the month of May, we’re talking about prioritizing the information you have and the objectives you’ve identified for yourself and putting them into action.

It’s about unpacking what you want to accomplish in your health, relationships, business, and life, identifying the “order of operations,” and putting in the work required to make it happen.

If you fall into “paralysis by analysis,” and often consume more than you produce, this is the month for you to band with 530 like-minded men who will help you accomplish more in the next 90 days than you ever have in a year.

“Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Most of us have heard some variation of that quote accredited to Viktor Frankl but most of us don’t know how to manage that space effectively and condition our minds and bodies to respond properly.

That’s why today’s conversation with New York Times Bestselling Author, Scott Carney, is crucial. During our discussion, we talk about the gap between stimulus and response, how to put ourselves into a highly-effective flow state, fight and flight chemistry, and how to rewire your mind and body for maximum results.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The placebo effect
  • Western medicine
  • Learning to be resilient
  • Fight or flight responses
  • Giving yourself stress
  • Connecting to the environment
  • The ultimate stress
  • Walking your own path
  • Unmitigated horror
  • Reliving your emotional pass
  • Living the status quo
  • Overriding your response
  • Throwing kettlebells
  • Practicing trust and empathy
  • A different point of reference
  • Creating bandwidth

SCOTT CARNEY

My guest today is New York Times Bestselling, Scott Carney, author of What Doesn’t Kill Us, and his new book, The Wedge.

He is an investigative journalist and anthropologist. He’s done work for Wired, Men’s Journal, Playboy, Discover, Outside, and Fast Company and he gained a lot of notoriety as he trained with Wim Hof. Originally, he intended on debunking a lot of Wim’s teachings but found the practices to be life-changing and a critical part of his life and work.

Scott’s been a friend for several years since he talked with us about his book, What Doesn’t Kill Us and you’re going to hear how much excitement he has for life. Quite frankly, it’s infectious.

IRON COUNCIL

As we close out the month of April in the Iron Council, I wanted to give you the heads up and let you know that for the month of May, we’ll be covering the topic of Prioritize and Execute.

Obviously, we’re living in some very interesting times and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for many men to navigate the uncertain waters. So, for the month of May, we’ll be doing a deep dive into effective strategies for organizing and prioritizing your life and, more important, taking massive action that will produce the biggest results.

We’ll uncover variables that are keeping you back and distracting you from what you want to achieve and give you the opportunity to band with 500+ high-achieving men to hold you accountable and potentially give you the kick in the pants you need.

I’m sure, by now, you’re aware of the powerful team an Echelon Front led by Navy SEAL Commander, Jocko Willink. At this point, I’ve had the majority of his team on the podcast including my guest today, Mike Sarraille.

Today, Mike talks with us about the power of the veteran community in the civilian sector. We go into some topics that aren’t usually addressed regarding transitioning military members including biases against veterans, the bitterness and entitlement some veterans develop, translatable skills from military to civilian life, and, ultimately, how we put our nation’s toughest warriors to work.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Joining the Marines
  • The demands of work
  • What’s truly important
  • Veteran suicide
  • Marching on Washington
  • Proving your worth
  • Finding the best
  • Producing value
  • Finding your passion
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Process of alimentation
  • Putting in your time
  • Positive Intent
  • Become irreplaceable
  • The pursuit of excellence
  • Feeling undervalued
  • Translatable skills
  • Focusing on soft skills
  • After action review
  • Transitioning soldiers out

MIKE SARAILLE

My guest today is Mike Sarraille. He is a retired Recon Marine and  Navy SEAL and, more recently the co-founder of EF Overwatch and leadership instructor/strategic advisor for Echelon Front.

He served alongside Jocko Willink and Leif Babin with SEAL Team THREE and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Ramadi in 2006. He also served as the primary leadership instructor for all officers graduating from the SEAL training pipeline and worked in the Joint Special Operations Command where he completed multiple combat tours.

Mike is a recipient of the Silver Star, six Bronze Stars, two Defense Meritorious Service Medals, and a Purple Heart. Today he is here to talk with us about his experience and how to put our nation’s warriors to work.

IRON COUNCIL

The Iron Council is growing. I think part of the reason for that is, during times of crisis, men know and have a desire to step into the positions that will best serve their families and communities. It’s built into our DNA to lead, especially in times of crisis.

And, that’s exactly what we’re doing to equip the men who band with us inside our exclusive brotherhood, The Iron Council. When you join with us, we’re going to give you the foundation for growth, success, and effective leadership as a father, husband, business owner, and community leader.

And, on top of that, you’re going to have a path to run on and a place where you can develop the camaraderie most men don’t get outside of military service or team sports.

If you’re ready to step up and want the framework and the accountability to do so, join us in the Iron Council by going to www.orderofman.com/ironcouncil.

My repeat guest, friend, former Navy SEAL, and author of the James Reece series which includes Terminal List, True Believer, and his newest (released today), Savage Son.

His name is Jack Carr and I take every opportunity I can to talk with him. And, if you’ve listened to any of our previous episodes, you’ll know exactly why. Jack is one of the most genuine men I know and I’ve always been fascinated with his transition from warrior to author.

Today, we talk about putting yourself in the public eye, pursuing something you’ve always been interested in, how military combat compares to civilian life and the life of a writer and forging the path you’ve always wanted to walk.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • Emerging opportunities
  • Leveling the playing field
  • Social media
  • Providing value
  • Those who sacrificed
  • Wasted bandwidth
  • The Cold War
  • Who you follow
  • An unassuming demeanor
  • Being kind to people
  • Flipping your switch
  • What’s next
  • The hero’s journey
  • Dealing with bureaucracy
  • Adapting quickly
  • Standard operating procedures

JACK CARR

My guest today is the one and only Jack Carr. He spent over 20 years in Naval Special Warfare as a SEAL Sniper, Troop Commander, and a Task Unit Commander leading a team in Iraq and Afghanistan.

It’s probably a big reason his last three books are so extremely credible – he’s used his decades of combat experience as the foundation for the immense amount of research that goes into his works.

Jack is also an avid hunter, a husband, and a father. He’s also a helluva guy as I’ve gotten to know him over the past several years and enjoyed our friendship.

And an update since we originally recorded this episode at SHOT Show several months ago, Jack’s book, Terminal List will become a TV Series with Chris Pratt playing James Reece.

I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.

IRON COUNCIL

I’ve got to say that regardless of the issues you may be dealing with due to the fallout of Coronavirus, this time truly can be a blessing in disguise if you’re willing to look at it that way.

I can’t think of a time where I’ve been more focused and distraction-free in my life than right now. Over the past four weeks, I’ve…

  • Lost 11lbs and 2.5% body fat
  • Increased revenue by 23% over last month
  • Completed my gym build-out
  • Completed my podcast studio renovation
  • Read 6 books
  • Completed the outline of my next book
  • Secured 7 high-caliber podcast guests
  • Appeared on 12 podcasts
  • Reached over 100,000 YouTube subscribers

I don’t tell you this to brag. I tell you this because there is a tremendous opportunity for you to crush your life right now. And, if you’re interested in how I and thousands of other men are doing it, consider joining us inside the Iron Council.

I’ve told you enough about it by now but I’d strongly encourage you to get off the sidelines and into the game so you too can produce the results you’re after and squeeze the most out of every minute you have.

We’ve all heard the term, “It’s not rocket science.” And, while that is true of most conversations, topics, and activities, there are benefits to thinking about problems the way a rocket scientist does.

Today, I am joined by Ozan Varol, a rocket scientist who formerly worked with NASA. In today’s conversation, we talk about what it means to test as you fly and fly as you test, the difference between strategies and tactics and why it matters, why it’s important to give you mental space to play, and why thinking like a rocket scientist will help you make giant leaps in your personal and professional life.

OZAN VAROL

My guest today is Ozan Varol. He was born in Istanbul and, at the age of 17, he moved to the United States alone to study astrophysics.

While he was there, he served on the operations team for the Mars Exploration Rovers. If that wasn’t enough, he then pivoted and graduated first in his class from law school and earned the highest grade point average in his law school’s history.

He now teaches law as a professor and his works have been featured in the Wall Street Journal,  Newsweek, TIME, CNN, and the Washington Post.

And, today, he is here to share some of his knowledge with us from his new book, Think Like a Rocket Scientist.

IRON COUNCIL

Alright guys, I know a bunch of you are stuck at home with the fallout from Corona Virus and, rather than binge watch tiger shows on Netflix, I know that you’d rather be doing something productive.

That’s why I want to invite you to join us in our brotherhood, the Iron Council. I’ve seen a lot of online groups popping up over the past month or so but we’ve been working for the last 5 years to ensure that when you join us, you’ll have a proven track record of success to tap into.

When you band with us, you’ll tap into the brotherhood and camaraderie that comes with it. You’ll unlock access to our planning system and the results it produces. And, most importantly, when this COVID-19 thing is all over, you’ll be among the relatively few who took this time as an opportunity to grow in all aspects of your life.

When most of us think about leadership, we think about inspiring, motivating, and influencing others. But rarely do we think deeply about our vision for a business, organization, or family. Ironic considering vision is the foundation of inspiration, motivation, and influence.

Today, I am privileged to be joined by a man who has been a tremendous leader to me on my path to build and lead the Order of Man movement. We cover so much in this conversion including the importance of a “vision grid,” how to effectively respond to resistance, four characteristics of great leadership, the difference between your “circle of concern” and your “circle of influence,” and the power of vision-driven leadership.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

  • The science of different things
  • The power of simplicity
  • Distilling information
  • Where all change begins
  • Casting vision
  • Hacking your belief system
  • Delusional vs. believable
  • The scope of possibilities
  • Vision vs. strategy
  • Adjusting your vision
  • Fear of missing out
  • Diagnosing your life 36:40
  • Finding inspiration
  • Being able to sell it
  • An inspirational-deficit world
  • Think of the end from the beginning

MICHAEL HYATT

My guest today is Michael Hyatt. He is an author, podcaster, speaker, and former chairman of Thomas Nelson publishing.

I came across Michael’s work years ago as I was launching the Order of Man podcast and for the last 5 years, I’ve been following his advice and implementing his strategies for growing and leading a movement, building effective organizational strategies, and taking charge of my business and personal life.

So, when his team reached out requesting to have Michael on our podcast, I jumped at the opportunity to have a conversation with a man who has been extremely influential in my life.

He is a New York Times Bestselling author and today, he is here to talk with us about his new book, The Vision Driven Leader.

IRON COUNCIL

This month (April 2020) in the Iron Council, we’re discussing and implementing strategies from our monthly conversation, A Life Examined.

In the midst of all this Coronavirus stuff, it’s likely that you have a bit more time on your hands than normal and, rather than waste this valuable time, you ought to consider using it as an opportunity to learn and grow.

And, that’s exactly where the Iron Council comes in. When you band with us, you’ll have access to our monthly assignments, challenges, accountability systems and tools, and brotherhood all designed to help you make the most of every day.

And, this is a great time to contemplate the purpose of your life and formulate a plan for becoming the man you have a desire to become.
