Join Ryan Michler as he explores the distinction between masculinity and manliness, a conversation that goes beyond mere semantics. Drawing insights from our social media followers, he discusses how masculinity often encompasses inherent traits like dominance and competitiveness, while manliness is about applying these traits through cultural, moral, and ethical lenses.

Men, we all have scars. Some are visible. Some are not. Some are physical. And, some are mental and emotional. Regardless of the scars you carry around, the stories behind them have the ability to shape you, for better or worse.

My guest today, 101st Airborne Division Combat Veteran, J.R. Martinez, has easily-seen external scars. But rather than use those scars as an excuse to self-destruct, Martinez has, instead, decided to use the stories and the lessons he’s learned on the road to recovery to make himself a better man. Today, J.R. and I talk about deliberately changing your perspective on life, what he calls, “God Winks,” and how to use them effectively in your life, how to get over perceived emasculation and make yourself into more, crafting a new identity for yourself when the old one is ripped from you, and how a man effectively deals with persecution from others.

This one is going to be a different one for you guys today. For the third time in the history of Order of Man in nearly a decade, we have a woman joining us on the podcast. Kelsi Sheren is a good friend of mine, and she is not afraid to pull punches. We’ve had some very public disagreements about the concept of “Vulnerability,” and “Feminism.” And, I thought, if we’re going to take this movement to the next level, all of us (myself included) need to take ourselves outside our comfort zones.

Today, Kelsi and I discuss masculine energy in women, where the idea of vulnerability falls flat, the difference between feminism and “modern-day feminism,” overcoming fear, why expectations of others just set you up for failure, why honesty and humility may be a better approach relative to vulnerability, where woman and men fail each other and themselves, and so much more.

What if mastering your emotions could make you not just a better man, but a stronger leader too? This week on Friday Field Notes, Ryan Michler unveils the seven signs of masculine maturity, essential for any man aiming to elevate his personal growth and leadership skills. Starting with an inspiring reading of Rudyard Kipling's timeless poem "If," Ryan sets a powerful tone for the first topic: emotional regulation. Through heartfelt personal stories, he reveals the transformative power of understanding and managing your emotions, enabling you to become a more effective protector, provider, and leader within your community and family.

He covers effective communication, emphasizing boldness, assertiveness, and taking full responsibility. It stresses self-care—physically, mentally, and emotionally—as a form of respect. Dressing well reflects pride and respect for your environment.

Ryan explores setting assertive boundaries with respect, maintaining composure in stressful situations, and improving relationships through confidence. Finally, it highlights being service-oriented as a mark of maturity, illustrated by a story about helping at a highway accident to show readiness to serve others.

Over 10 years, one of the most common messages I get is a strong desire for men to find their calling, so to speak. Studies often suggest that upwards of 70% of men are dissatisfied in their work and general fulfillment in life. But it’s a challenge to find something you’re interested in and turn it into a profitable and lucrative career that brings both a sense of purpose and financial prosperity.

My guest today, Michael Hunter, is a man who is doing exactly that. Introduced to hunting at the age of 18 and a self-proclaimed glutton for food, Michael has found a way to merge the world of hunting and culinary excellence into some that brings him both a deep sense of satisfaction and provided he and his family a way of life. Today, we talk about the painstakingly slow path to progress, the importance of asking for exactly what you want, standing for what’s right in the face of bad actors, when luck, God’s grace, and hard work collide, and how you can find your path through the passion you build.

Empathy. It’s likely a word that conjures up unnecessary softness or, even weakness. But there’s nothing weak about being empathetic and it certainly does mean you need to allow others to wallow in their own self-pity or walk all over you. In fact, when utilized correctly, empathy can be a powerful tool for realizing your full potential and influencing others positively along their own path.

My guest today, David Waldy, joins me to make the case for men adding a level of what he calls fierce empathy into their lives. We talk about what empathy really means, why we lie to others and ourselves, how to stop lying, learning to heal yourself strategically and tactically, borrowing from other people’s success, and how to craft and utilize a new identity for who you are.

Whenever I (or one of my guests) introduces the concept of male initiation, it’s met with skepticism, at best, and a level of immense disdain and vitriol, at worst. But why is it that men struggle so much with the concept of initiation, that is to say that a man must learn from other men what it means to be a man and be held accountable to maintain his moral duty to protect, provide, and preside?

My guest today, Jake Hamilton, makes the case for male initiation drawing on ancient initiations in some of the most remote locations on the planet. We talk about how to harness a man’s sexual desire towards productive outcomes, what the lowest form of a man’s identity is, where the patriarchy falls short, integrating your “shadow” (something Jung unpacks deeply), the difference between working toward the greater good and the common good, and how a man answers his own internal desire to be respected and desired.
